Medicare Plan Types & Benefits

Which plan is best for you depends on your needs. Do you travel a lot? Do you prefer low premiums or higher out of pocket costs? Let us help you compare plans and choose one that works well for you!

What is a Special Election Period or Initial Enrollment Period?

Special Election Period (SEP)

Allows a person to enroll in or make changes to their Medicare plan outside of the regular enrollment window when certain qualifying life events occur. There are over 30 different Special Enrollment Period qualifying events. Some events include:

  • Retiring
  • Losing current group health coverage
  • Loss of coverage through Medicaid
  • On Medicare and recently moved

Initial Enrollment Period (IEP)

This is the first opportunity for most people to enroll in Medicare when they first become eligible by turning 65 and aging into Medicare. This stage begins 3 months before the month you turn 65 and continues for 3 months after your birthday month.

What is Medicare Supplement Insurance (Medigap)?

Medicare, often referred to as Original Medicare (Parts A and B), provides coverage for basic healthcare needs. Medicare Supplement Insurance, also known as Medigap, is private insurance designed to fill the “gaps” left by Original Medicare. There are 10 standardized Medigap plans available in most states, each offering different benefits, limits, and exclusions. To determine which plan best suits your needs, you can consult with a licensed insurance agent in your area using our online questionnaire or calling the phone number provided and a licensed insurance agent will answer your call. The service is free with no obligation to enroll. Enrollment in a plan may be limited to certain times of the year unless you qualify for a special election or enrollment period or you are in your Medicare Initial Election Period.

What is Medicare Advantage?

It’s a popular choice for people who want more comprehensive coverage, convenience from bundled services, and an alternative to Original Medicare. Medicare Advantage includes both Part A (hospital insurance) and Part B (medical insurance) coverage. Plans could include additional benefits that can be discussed with a licensed insurance agent to determine options specific to you and your area.

Who can enroll in Medicare Advantage?

To join, you must:

  • Be enrolled in Medicare Parts A and B
  • Live in the plan’s service area

Enrollment in a plan may be limited to certain times of the year unless you qualify for a special election or enrollment period or you are in your Medicare Initial Election Period.
